Welcome / Bienvenu

This blog presents my different wargames armies, after action reports, campaigns which I have run, some scenarios and a presentation of some of the different rules I play. The pages at the top of the blog contain historical information on the periods that interest me. They are an aid to my poor memory, and not in any way exhaustive nor necessarily correct. As I am an Englishman living in France, some pages are in English and others in French...sorry, I am too lazy to translate...

I hope this blog offers you much enjoyment and some inspiration !

Medieval European (1147-1225)

This is a 28mm army designed for playing "Saga" with either the Crusaders or the Norman (ie. Medieval French) battle boards.  The helms worn by the knights date this army at its earliest to the period around the Second Crusade (1147).  The "Norman-style" armour worn by the poorer knights or sergeants yields an end date for this army around 1225-1250.

It is thus intended for, amongst other conflicts :

-  The Second Crusade (that of the French king Louis VII and Aliénor of Aquitaine)
-  The Third Crusade (Richard Lionheart, Philip Augustus and Frederic Barberousse)
-  The Fourth Crusade (attack on Zara, then on Byance, creation of the Latin Kingdoms and then a long-running war with the Byzantine successor states)
-  The Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars in Southern France
-  The war between Capetians and Plantagenets in northern and western France, and in England, culminating in the battle of Bouvines in 1214.

I plan additional troops for this army :

-  Arab infantry and cavalry, allowing it to represent the army of Norman Sicily in its battles against Fatimid Egypt and Byzance.
-  Jinetes and light infantry, allowing it to represent the army of the Spanish Reconquista, which won the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.

This General can be played as a standard one, or as an Ecclesiastical Lord (a Priest-General).

Knights (Guard), 4 pts

I can deploy 4 pts of Knights, probably as two units mixing wealthier lords with up to date Equipment, and lesser or poorer lords with "Norman-style" equipment.  Alternatively, the "Norman" knights can be detached and form a 1 pt unit of mounted Warriors.

Mounted Sergeants (Warriors), 1 pt

As stated above, the eight less well equipped knights can be grouped together as a unit of mounted Warriors.

Spearmen (Warriors), 2 pts

Foot sergeants, the majority of whom are equipped with chainmail, mixed in however with less well armoured troops.  All carry spear and shield. I imagine deploying these as a larger unit of 10 warriors, and a smaller unit of 6 warriors (for some nefarious scheme).

Crossbowmen (Warriors), 1 pt

The official Saga Crusader list allows only one unit of crossbowmen, who must be warriors.  I however painted twelve of them, allowing me to field two units for Command & Colors or, as an unofficial variant, to play the crossbowmen as Levies.
