A quick list of tricks for painting fur (on animals, animal skins, etc...)
- White undercoat
- Depending on the animal represented, paint on the different colours (for example, for a wolf, one or two tones of Brown, orange-brown, off-white, dark grey), wet-blending them.
- Wash with diluted ink (black ink over grey areas, sepia over Brown or orange-brown for example).
The ink can be more diluted over lighter colours. The aim of this step is to provide depth by sinking ink into the recesses.
- Highlight maybe 75% of strands of fur with off-white, in various quantites
- Wash selected areas (GW lavis are perfect for this; for example sepia over Brown, orange over brown-orange, black over grey), this step blends the highlights and gives extra intensity
- Highlight some strands of fur with off-white, taking into account light direction at this point
- Varnish with matt varnish, no added medium, to give a slight sheen
