Bulgar Empire (900-1014)

The Bulgars converted to Christianity during the 9th century.  Their empire was destroyed by Basil II in 1014, after a long and bloody war.

This is army list 155 of Art de la Guerre.

Figures are from Essex (mounted nobles, foot archers) and Old Glory (light horse archers and Slav foot).

This army is another combination of my Ghuzz / Khazar armies.

The Bulgars were the ruling caste of a mostly Slavic population.  Their subjects served as spearmen.

Foot archers :

Poorer Bulgars provided foot archers, fighting either in massed formations or as skirmishers.
